What is this used for and does it have value?

Could anyone please tell me what this was used for? It's quite bizarre to not have a bottom.

This is not Chinese - nor antique, probably.
If it looks as if there is a rough, unglazed area around the inner circumference, near the bottom end, it could be that the bottom was removed intentionally, or that the bottom got dislodged for some other reason. No idea whether and for what this could have been used.
