Wanli shipwreck bowl - Enigmatic mark (better photos)

by J.Lim

Hi Peter

Again I hope you remember this issue.

1. Does the mark on the base of this bowl mean anything with this marginally better photo? Remember, I thought it said "Yue Hua Si Ri", or "Moon Fade Eye Sun", but you thought it might be a Chenghua mark.

2. What on earth is the object in Photo 3? I thought it might be a plowman and his horse - or maybe a pagoda? Or even a wonky looking Qilin?

Thanks a lot Peter for your comments earlier!

Whoops!

Hi Peter

Thanks, but I seem to have accidentally posted the exact same image of the bottom as last time. Yikes! I will upload the better image immediately.

Any ideas about the odd figure in Photo 3? And am I right in calling this austere landscape a Transitional style decoration?

It looks like an apocryphal Chenghua mark. Item made during reign of Wanli or later.

mark

You might better post the characters in Chinese, but better still is a larger mark image with good resolution. The bigger one is blurred.
I can only reiterate it is "成化年造" in my view. Ming dynasty marks are sometimes badly written.
I also checked the marks in Sten's book and it is most likely that it is what I think. I have never seen a mark reading the way you write it, I'm afraid.
