Unusual object

Hi, Peter!
My apologies not to post the piece of the century again, but I would be very grateful for your or anyone else opinion who, where, when and why put someone so much precious porcelain and work to create this colorful object. My guess is an incense holder from a folk artist somewhere in rural China. The piece is very heavy, 8"x8"x6 1/2".

Hi Peter!
So that's why I had that strange feeling! I was so much focused on Chinese that despite now its obvious Japanese characteristics I was completely blindfolded to recognize them. This much about my expertise! Thank you for opening up my eyes, I've learned something (again) from you today! I can't express my gratitude enough for your willingness trying to educate the less capable like me!
