thanks again peter. have added a couple more pictures but I think you're right. I need to get somebody to look at it and value it. I'm beginning to become fairly convinced it's early 20th Century though !

A hole in or near the base means usually that it was used for a lamp; it's the place were the wire went in. When the hole is in the bottom the item stood on a base stand, normally.
Unfortunately, I am still not sure if this is authentic or not. If the top rim is glazed, then it is at the most early Qing dynasty or republican period, and it looks as IF it were glazed. The mark type would also be pointing to late Qing. I find four things a bit odd, however: 1. The faces are painted with a different type of blue. 2. Somehow it looks as if the outlines also were drawn in a lighter blue, and then the dark blue was painted over it. 3. The decoration looks a bit chaotic for this type. Decorations with human figures are usually fairly simple. 4. The expressions of the faces are too clear. Quite unusual.
Are other items (than the faces) also painted with light blue outlines? The above could mean it is a later 20th century product. Not sure from these pictures. I would try to have someone experienced do a hands-on check. The rim and interior may give additional hints...sometimes.

This is a Kangxi reign mark. To check if it is of the period additional closeup shots of neck, people's faces and foot rim would be necessary.
