PETER, IS THIS NEW EGGSHELL PORCELAIN ?

by Stewart
(Tasmania)

HI Peter,
I showed this small bowl to a friend & even though it has the right looking Tongzhi mark on the base, he believes it to be a few years old at least..his explanation was that the bowl was made in a mould
I was led to believe that all eggshell porcelain is made by pouring a thin slip of porcelain over a plaster mould, then when dry it is laboriously thinned by a master in this field.
Would do you think about all this & is it possible I may have a genuine Tongzhi period piece? & not a mass- produced one as my friend seems to think?
regards, Stewart.
PS: the bowl is unglazed only on the upper rim.

As far as I know egg shell porcelain was indeed made by hand by shaving off most material until almost only the glaze remained.
Whether your item was molded I do not know, but it is not from the Qing dynasty. This is a 20th century item.

The Tongzhi mark does not look like a period mark to me, as a character type is used that was popular in the 20th century. Also, the colors uses are would not correspond to those used in the 19th century, I think.
