Pair of Chinese Vases

by Aaron McG
(Sydney, NSW, Australia)

I have two Chinese vases that have been in my family for several generations. My great great grandfather was a sea captain during the opium wars and brought these back with him.
I literally have no information other than they are approximately 150 years old as this is around when he brought them back here.
They are about 40cm, a yellowish colour that fades to green at the top and bottom. They have gold inlay and are in perfect condition, although there is a light cracking all over the vases.
There is no stamp under the base, I don't know what this might signify.

Any help on dating or any other information would be great. I've looked around and haven't really come across any vases that are similar.

Thank you Peter! I was always told that it was Chinese but never questioned it. What you said makes sense to me.

Thanks for your time.

not Chinese vases
by: peter

Hello,
I can only tell you that this is definitely not an antique Chinese vase. The decoration looks European except the central part on front and back side. They make me think it is Japanese. The phoenix is Chinese, but was also used in Japan, but the chrysanthemun and fan-like shape are indicating it is Japanese.
Japan produced and exported western style decorations for export since the 19th century.
I cannot help you with age, but if it were 150 years, it would be late Edo period or Meiji era.
