Need Help With Cheng Hua Vase

by Philip L
(San Jose CA)

I know the mark means: "made in the year of Cheng Hua", but I'm not certain the age of my vase. Can someone please take a shot at identifying what I have, it was passed down to me through family without any information on what the value might be. If it has value I would like to sell it.

Thank You in advance, Phil L.

Dear Peter,

Thank you very much for the info, I have received so many different opinions on this vase, but after doing a lot of research I believe your opinion to be the most accurate. Thank you very much.

I know you don't give appraisals, but does this have any value at all?

Best Regards

Phil

It has collection value, but the monetary value is difficult to tell. You can compare with Ebay vases of this type, but this is not necessarily the going price in the market you sell.
I have had a Fangge vase (much larger than yours) value in Britain. It has been valued both at the Antiques Roadshow and by a ceramics valuer. They both were in the vicinity of £250. Here in Taiwan a very experienced collector suggested a price that was more than ten times that price.
Which is correct? Well you cannot compare these as the market is different.
This is just an example why I'm reluctant to speak about value. There are too many factors involved. Sorry!

crackled vase w/blue and white decoration
by: peter

Hello,
What you have is a Fangge vase with blue and white decoration. Your vase is late Qing dynasty. This type usually has crackles and the brown decoration bands. Most have a Chenghua mark inscribed, but as you know this is apocryphal. The mark is for decoration only.
