Where do I go from here? by: Bob
Peter, when you say later than Ming or Qing, any speculation on how much later? Where should I go from here for additional research? Thanks, Bob
No way to tell for sure. Unless you can find a similar item, I would think late Qing to 20th century... Unfortunately, I doubt there is any quick way other than learning it all, and even then it is sometimes difficult to tell whether something is real or not... thanks to the many fakes and copies. I would think a hands on inspection would be the only way to be fairly sure, either way. Just get some more opinions, where and when you can. This is always better when in doubt. I would do that too. Peter I would think a ands

Porcelain box? by: peter
Hi Bob, Thanks for the additional pictures. I see why you thought it could possibly be be Japanese. After seeing the lid I feel less confident that it isn't. But, the mark would still be a question in this case.
I never saw something like this. What is it? A lid with slits and holes, but no knob for lifting... This should be a Wucai decoration, but the colors, especially the green isn't quite right for Ming or early Qing. It should be greener. In my opinion the bottom is a bit too white, and the double ring of the mark too neat for Ming dynasty. On the other hand, one of the characters is written in a way that was specific to that period of the mark.
Voicing it carefully, I assume this was made much later, trying to copy Ming period items.
