Kraak Wanli Bottle?

by Andy
(London)

Hi again Peter,
I am sorry if these enquiries of mine are beginning to get tedious but I have two more items I'd love to pick your brains about. Am I correct in thinking this is a Wanli Garlic neck bottle vase? ( having had the neck reduced and replaced with some sort of metal top) It certainly looks like the ones I have seen in my research online. The thing is the vast majority of info out there is more geared towards valuations than anything else. Does this look like a period one? What was its purpose purely decoration or as a vessel? Anything you could tell me I would really appreciate. Many thanks Andy. PS its about 10 inches tall

Perfect!

That's great news Peter. I am so pleased. Since I acquired these items I have completely caught the bug on Chinese ceramics. Very, very complex for a novice like me but fascinating. Delft was my collecting interest but I can see why people go nuts for Asian items. The only draw back I have found along the way is the extortionate price of good literature which is such a shame. I have seen books advertised for £700-800. This is why it is so great to have help and advice from people like yourself. I got a few more items but I do like to try and research them a little from what means I have as its a good way to pick up knowledge. I am sure I will be back again! Again, many thanks Peter!

You are welcome Andy... always glad to see something really old. Most enquiries here are related to second half of 20th century items.
Yes, looks right to me for Wanli Kraak. I don't know if this would be classified as vase or bottle. But, I assume that this found a more practical use in Europe (as bottle). The mouth is a bit small.
In China, items of this shape are usually vases, but Kraak wares did practically not exist in China itself. It was made for export. Anyway, bottle or vase, Kraak items of this shape are few. Most what you can get hands on are plates, bowls, cups and dishes.
