Kintsugi Repair - what is it?

Kintsugi is a type of porcelain restoration traditionally used in Japan.  Simply said, tree lacquer (Japan lacquer) is used for bonding of breaks or recreation of missing parts. Instead of spraying or re-painting of the decoration or glaze metal powder of gold, silver, copper etc. is applied on its surface to beautify the broken or restored area. Making it looking more beautiful.

Kintsugi is sometimes also used to break whole ceramics and repairing them in order to beautify them.

The tree lacquer can be directly applied to the breaks before sticking them together. Missing parts are re-created by mixing the lacquer with a bulking agent, then the missing parts are filled.
After drying the repaired areas are ground down until they are completely level with the neighbouring areas. Then another, thin layer is applied on top and powder of gilt or mica (a gilt replacement) or silver is strewn unto the laquer to cover it completely. After drying this is again made level by grinding it down and polishing it.
