Picked this up a garage sale for $.50 yesterday and have no idea if it is worth anything or not. Is it a really old piece or a forgery, or even a valuable forgery. It was very filthy so I cleaned it up a bit, but do not know what to do about the brown on flip side with the red mark. Is this a genuine export mark? Note the mark on the front that is incised. Is that ownership mark? There was like a bunch of rust around it. Any help on assessing this would be appreciated as I am just starting to learn about these things.

I do not know what the red mark is. I have previously seen red, hand painted markings also. The reason I call them markings is because they do not seem to be related to the item itself. Currenty, I think it is some sort of batch marking or sales or trading related marking. You can ignore it as it seems to be irrelevant.

The shine is actually from the skylight overhead. It looks rather worn and dull in reality. Yes, the mark is tiny drilled holes. What is the octagonal red stamp on the back about? It is hard to see and my camera does not do well at close up. Any idea?

The shine of the glaze made me first think it is a modern copy, there are some fakes of this type of plate on the market, but some details indicate it is old.
The bottom color is easily faked, but I have a couple of these plates, all with the same bird design, and all have the dark bottom also.
Further, to the left of the thick branch there is a brownish character, it is probably the one you call incised. If it is made of drilled holes, then it would be right as you said, an ownership marking. It is the number "four" in Chinese, actually. There are other signs of age.

There is no real mark on this plate. These plates were never marked and I don't think this was made for export, but rather for domestic use.
Did you say $0.50? I would say in a shop you would pay at least $50, rather more.
This is a common plate that is usually attributed to the mid-18th century. Enjoy!
