INTERESTING CUP WITH WATERMARK FIGURE INSIDE

by WIRA SATRIA
(MALAYSIA)

Hi Peter,

This is another item which I need you to advise. The interesting part is, the inner base has a watermark, look like a lady. The watermark of the lady can only be seen if you direct the cup to a light, if no light, its look like a normal cup.

What do you think?

The ware is generally called slip-trailed dragon ware, was very common export production around 1920s, including with lithopane images.

Recent reproductions being made producing same effect, but the lithopane image is much more crudely molded in base of the pieces so you can easily see and feel the raised part.

Other commenter is right this was part of larger tea set. Single pieces not much value, so much was made with variety of colors and decoration details, hard to match with rest of a set.

This is Japanese lithophane and much information is available on the Internet. Be sure to indicate Japanese as the process was also used in Europe with different style images.

cup with face in bottom

This is Japanese, but I know how old. The face in the bottom has been produced in the 19th century, but I do not know from when to when. Maybe someone else knows.
