Famille Rose Dish - 18th century??

by J.Lim

Hi Peter

A brand new query this time, with proper photos.

I got this dish at a ridiculously low price at a local auction. The auction house described it as "early 18th century Oriental".

My reaction to it is that it is possibly 18th century Chinese Famille Rose export ware. (Kangxi? Qianlong?) The rust spots, glaze voids and flaws in the body show some age. It is also definitely porcelain as it is light, hard and rings like a bell.

What do you think? Sometimes I think the gilded flowers look strangely Japanese. But then again I don't know famille rose too well.

Regards

It is oblique

Hi Peter

Thanks a lot for your assistance. The foot rim is indeed oblique on the outside so that's a relief.

Any ideas on what part of the 18th century it comes from? Is this part of the famille rose boom in Qianlong's day?

18th Century Qianlong

The plate and decoration appears to be Qianlong circa 1770. Like Peter said, it looks like a typical export pattern for the European market with European style deco.

yes!!!

This looks like a typical Chinese export dish for the European market. If you have seen something similar in Japanese porcelain, that could be. But, the style which the roses are painted in is rather European than Chinese.

If the foot rim is somewhat oblique on the outside, then it should be 18th century, no problem.
