cylinder shaped vase

by Marinell Harriman
(Alameda, CA)

This vase has been in our family since the early 1940s, so it's at least 70 years old. We were told that it's Chinese but have never been able to find any details. I am puzzled by the shape. I haven't found any cylinder-shaped, slightly concave, Chinese vases anywhere online.

It also has only a single mark on the bottom, which I can't identify. Can you help? Thanks.

European tin-glazed ware
by: Snap

Do internet search for word ~albarello~ for this general shape. This could be a reproduction of the sort of tin-glazed earthenware made in western Europe as a cheaper alternative to Chinese and Japanese porcelain that was coming to Europe in the 15th (tiny quantities) to 17th (more) centuries. When the more durable and moisture-impermeable porcelain began to be imported to Europe in larger quantities in the 18th and 19th centuries, the market for the European goods declined, although a very few factories make some roughly similar items today (do internet search for Torquay).

Hi, I doubt that this is Asian at all, at least not Far Eastern, I would say.
It is not only the shape, the decoration doesn't look like anything from the Far East either, and the mark is definitely not a Chinese or Japanese character mark.
Could be an item from Europe, perhaps.
