Covered bowl

I enclose another photo. As I bought it in Portebello Rd, London I thought it might not be new. I bought it in 1982 and it gives me great pleasure even if it is new.

Could you please help me identify this covered bowl. It measures 28cm wide by 16cm high. It is unsigned and has a few small glaze contraction holes. I am interested in its original purpose.
