Can you give me an idea of what this vase is?

Hi everyone - my wife's mother inherited this vase, and I'm wondering about its origin...era, and so on. The vase stands 46cm (about 18 inches) tall. There is a small rectangular marking on the base, but there are no discernible markings within the rectangle. My ill-informed guess is that it's a Chinese Imari vase, not particularly rare or valuable, but I could be way off the mark.
